After New Orleans was devastated by Hurricane Katrina the city never fully recovered. With the project Culinary Wardship, I wanted to bring back a sense of community to the Desire area, near the lower 9th ward, in New Orleans. After doing research and diagramming I started thinking about how I wanted to protect the building and the users with a large thermal massing wall with the programmatic spaces coming off of the parti wall. The design was also influenced by the topography of the site and the wanting to protect. The topography of the site was developed first so that the building developed from the elevations of the site. Only the first floor, the main entrance, is with in the flood plane of 6'-8', all other floors are elevated at least 13'.
